Thiago Silva, a controversial former UFC fighter, signed an exclusive contract with WSOF and should soon debut in the aforementioned promotion. The news is now confirmed by the legendary Ray Sefo, the World Series of Fighting President. According to Sefo, Silva is to participate in the for-man-tournament that will crown the first WSOF light heavyweight champion and his opponent will be Ronny Markes
The tournament will be held March 28 and both semi-finals will take place in the same evening. The venue is still not known.
Silva was fired from the UFC despite great results and many major victories. However, this controversial Brazilian fighter had problems with discipline, abuse of illegal substances and criminal deeds. Last year Silva threatened his ex-wife with gun and threatened to kill her new partner and BJJ instructor Pablo Popovitch. In the end, police managed to arrest him and put him to prison. However, Silva was soon released and his wife refused to cooperate with the authorities as the key witness. After that he signed a new contract with the UFC, but he was fired again two weeks later because of the video clips of him beating his wife that his wife published.
However, WSOF leaders do not care about that…
We researched his situation, and the charges were dropped. He wasn't convicted. In my opinion, you're innocent until proven guilty. The guy is a great fighter so we want to give him an opportunity."
Zovko negotiated with Silva!
Silva's management also negotiated with the Croatian promotion FFC and their President Orsat Zovko. The two parties intensively negotiated on Silva's joining the FFC and contract on two matches in 2015. At the same time Zovko negotiated on some other popular Blackzillians who are interested in a career in Europe.
"Unfortunately, we did not manage to agree on Thiago Silva, but that does not mean we will not bring another big name in the FFC in 2015. We are constantly working on reinforcing the roster and one of the agencies we are negotiating with is the agency working with Blackzillians from Florida“, said Zovko and added:
"Thiago was very interesting to us primarily because he is one of the best light heavyweight fighters in the world and a former UFC star. And as you know, the FFC light heavyweight category is packed with excellent fighters such as Sakara, Bekavac, Spahovic, Batinic, Prachnio, Rakic… We are still negotiation on other names and we will soon reveal what we decided.“
In the end Zovko revealed Blackzillians contacted the FFC which is a proof that FFC became known worldwide and that the world's biggest agencies, gyms and fighters are interested in the cooperation with the Croatian promotion. The FFC President already announced the FFC is to hold its first event in March, but the details are to be revealed soon.
